Acne affects about 80% of teenagers and young adults, with severe cases leading to permanent skin damage such as scarring. This can be particularly unwelcome when the face is affected. So it’s not surprising that strong measures are sometimes taken, including the use of antibiotics and retinoic acid.
Unfortunately, these treatments are not without problems. Resistance is growing against antibiotics, while retinoic acid can cause serious side effects, including birth defects, when used at therapeutic doses. So we’re back at square one.
Or are we? Attention has turned to an extract from the seeds of the Babchi plant (psoralea corylifolia) – Bakuchiol.
Several Ao products use this substance because of its proven efficacy in a number of skin conditions. These include acne vulgaris:
Bakuchiol, a meroterpene of plant origin, shows promise as a new agent that can complement and enhance the effectiveness of currently available anti-acne formulations. Bakuchiol is likely the only agent after retinoic acid shown to be effective against multiple pathophysiologic features of acne.
Better still, bakuchiol has anti-aging properties, which we cover in this post.
When you find an effective ingredient that tackles several skin issues at once, you know you’re onto a winner.
