Bakuchiol is a hot topic in skin care at the moment.
Bakuchiol is a meroterpene phenol extracted from the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia plant. It has been found to work as a "functional analogue of retinol", a synthetic vitamin A used in skincare for its anti-aging properties.
“Based on this study, we propose that Bakuchiol can function as an anti-aging compound through retinol-like regulation of gene expression.”
Unlike retinol, Bakuchiol is a non-irritating compound with no associated side effects. It is non-irritating, non-sensitizing and can be used during the day including outdoors as it does not make the skin photosensitive.
In a 12-week study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science comparing retinol and bakuchiol, results showed “significant improvement in lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, firmness and overall reduction in photo-damage,” without undesirable retinol side effects such as dryness and irritation when using bakuchiol.
